I met my online friend, Janiece, today!For those of you not "in the know," the reference to a "Hot Chick" is from her personal blog, Hot Chicks Dig Smart Men. I can verify now that she is, indeed, a hot chick. We have photographic evidence (one in which I am, unfortunately, tucking in my chin for some reason, adding the obligatory 10 pounds per camera), but alas, I left it on the work computer, so I'll have to add that tomorrow morning. [Photo added Thurs. morning, and self-deprecating comment dialed back.]
We talked about a number of things, mostly family, work, and the work/life balance, nothing too earth-shattering. Sadly for you all, we didn't really talk about our online community. I guess we'll have to leave that for another day. Actually, I'd love to hear how Janiece found John Scalzi's Whatever, which is where I met her.
We had a tasty Mexican (pardon me, New Mexican) lunch at Little Anita's on south Colorado Blvd. (By the way, while looking for a reference, I found a cool site that reviews Mexican restaurants. I agree with their takes on all the ones I know.) Janiece recognized me because the blog entry about my car included a picture. So, not only hot, but smart too! We had fun and plan to do it again sometime in the near future.
PS - Apparently, Janiece, I had actual work to do too. Who knew? ;)

I found the Whatever after reading "Old Man's War," BTW. Picked the book up from the SFBC, and checked Whatever because I enjoyed OMW so much. Who knew?
For me it was a link on a friend's blog. It was when John was editing an issue of Subterranean Magazine and was soliciting short stories. I followed the link and never looked back. I read OMW *after* finding Whatever.

I don't actually know where I first saw the link to Whatever myself, except that it was to the post about Lori Jareo, who tried to sell her Star Wars fanfic through Amazon. I think that was mid-2005 or so. I've not yet read OMW, but bought it in December, so will get to it soon.

An acquaintance saw me reading one of Elizabeth Moon's books and recommended "Old Man's War". I got three or four pages into it and thought, "Wow, who is this guy?" I googled him and have been a rabid Whatever fan ever since.
I think its kind of interesting that the whole "Anne, Janiece, Jim, Shawn, Jim, MWT, Jeri and on and on, etc. etc." circle all "met" on the Whatever.
Anyway, Anne, you're bookmarked now. Hope you can stand up to the pressure. (I'm giving you that Shawn Powers' avatar look.)

I shall do my best to keep up with your high expectations. I will point out that the tone of my blog comes from its origins as a source of news for friends and family. It's pre-Blogger predacessor was called, appropriately enough, "el mundo annie." So, it's primarily anecdotal. It's not current event oriented, like Jim's or Janiece's, nor encyclopedic, like MWT's. And you won't see any cute videos like Shawn's. However, I like it, and that's what really counts, doesn't it? ;)
Long story short, welcome to my blog.

Actually, Nathan, you're not really allowed to complain. The rest of us post snippets here and there, while you post entire book chapters. I'm thinking we're the ones who should be complaining about time suckage. Just sayin'.
I found the "e" from a link on SciFi Signal. Lurked for a few months, then took the commenting plunge. Then recently I started clicking on the names of people whose comments I liked. That's how I found Janiece, Jim Wright, Kate Baker, Shawn Powers, etc. Now I'm reading a bunch more blogs of interesting people. Who knew?

I do like that we're turning into quite a cozy community. But I don't think it's required to read every single blog within the circle. ;) I just go with the ones that interest me for my daily rounds, and then the others I click through less frequently via the links on other people's pages.
The tone of mine has been shifting around since I originally started, that's for sure. ;) Encyclopedic was my original aim, and I'll probably always do those weird cryptic essays that make no sense to anyone but me (and possibly whoever I wrote them for). But I might also start doing more of the ones like Poofy and the blatherings about myself.
Meeting in person someone you met on line can be extremely delightful and full of life altering experiences. I should know I am married to the man I met on line.

Tom, that's exactly what I did - start checking into the blogs of people who were smart, articulate, and funny. I do recall that the nail in the coffin for my wanting to interact with these people more was when John opened up the "e".
I agree with you, MWT. You also get a feel for the rhthym of a blogger and know how often you can check back for entertaining material.
I discovered Whatever from a list of the top 100 SF/F blogs - which I can't find now. It's just as well, I don't need more, I only made it through the top 15 or so.
I started visiting folks blogs after seeing them post on the 'e'. It just seemed a natural - if alightly stalkerish - extension. And I'm by nature a commenter more than I'm a lurker.
It is fun that the blogs I've visited so far blog are all quite different, with a distinct voice.
